I could not have finished this book without the help and encouragement of friends, family and colleagues. I am so grateful to all of you. If I have left anyone out I apologise.
I have mentioned many people in this book. I realise that I am telling the story from my own point of view and that they may remember things differently. Sorry if I got it wrong. I hope I tell the story the way they would like it to be told.
First I would like to thank Sharon’s wonderful husband for letting me go ahead with this book. To protect his privacy I have referred to him as M. He has had his own journey of grief and now has a new life with a new partner and family.
I would like to say a big thank you to Sue, Sharon’s mum in law, and to my sister Sue for all their help, encouragement and support with the book and with the songs. Many thanks also to all the friends who I’ve asked to listen to songs, read words, look at chapters and asked, “Is it OK?” You have given me ideas, inspiration and encouragement. Your support is much appreciated! Thank you to Sheila, Mary, Yvonne and Chris in particular.
Many thanks go to Nik, for his tolerance and patience, for cheering me up and keeping me going. Also for all his help on the technical side, with computers and microphones and all that technology!
Most of all, thanks go to Bob Heath and to all at Sobell House Hospice, especially the Bereavement Service. Thank you for the music!
This book would not have been written if Sharon had not been the person she was. I have felt her presence as I have written the book and sung the songs. This book is for her. Someone once said that perhaps the songs were her gift to me. So thank you to Sharon.
